The International Trade Centre (ITC), Liberia Export Development Program
One of the main priorities of the new Liberian Government is to revive and empower the private sector both formal and informal to contribute to the growth of the economy. Given the relatively small size of the domestic market of Liberia, the country needs an outward oriented strategy.
The Government of Liberia recognizing the importance of creating an enabling environment for exports and imports to take place, while assessing the available services and resources for trade development within the country, building a platform for dialogue on trade between the public and private sectors, and developing a roadmap for trade development within the Ministry of Commerce and Industry; empowering women and youth throughout all trade development activities, assisting operators in the informal sector to engage in to higher value added activities and setting up an effective price monitoring and export marketing, and reviving the standards and quality infrastructure, entered into a partnership with the International Trade Centre (ITC) to help facilitate the process of boosting Liberia’s trade potentials and propelling Liberia back on the world trade map.
As a tangible outgrowth of Liberia’s accession to AGOA and the Private Sector Forum in Washington, D. C. and in collaboration with the UN International Trade Centre, Geneva (ITC), plans began to develop a roadmap for trade development and a Trade and Export Promotion Framework for Liberia, which would also prepare Liberia to take advantage of the benefits, afforded it under AGOA.
The International Trade Centre (ITC) with headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland is the joint technical cooperation agency of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) for operational enterprise-oriented aspects of trade development is presently partnering with the Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the Ministry of Agriculture on the Liberia Export Development Project (LEDP) as a way of promoting Liberia non-traditional exportable products for export. The Liberia program of the International Trade Centre (ITC) is currently headed by Dr. Ramin Granfar, Trade Promotion Officer of the Office for Africa at the International Trade Centre (ITC) Geneva, Switzerland.
